SCAC and container prefixes are not interchangeable

A SCAC identifies a transportation company, while the first three letters of an ISO container number identify the registered equipment owner and the fourth letter identifies the equipment category. They can match for some carriers, but not every container a carrier moves is carrier-owned.

Use the authoritative registry

U.S. Customs and Border Protection defines a SCAC as a unique two-to-four-letter transportation-company identifier and directs applications, renewals, and official verification to NMFTA. Use this CargoScope table as an operational reference, then verify regulatory or filing-critical codes with CBP or NMFTA.
