Delivery Order meaning in ocean freight.

A delivery order (D/O) is the document that authorizes a trucker or warehouse to collect specific cargo or containers. Depending on the country, the carrier's agent issues it after release, or the importer's customs broker issues it to the trucking company.

Issuer depends on the country

In many countries, the delivery order comes from the carrier or its local agent once the original bill is surrendered, or the waybill conditions are met, and local charges are paid; the consignee presents it at the terminal or freight station. In US practice, the D/O is usually the customs broker's or importer's instruction to a trucking company. Same name, different issuer, so ask which one a partner means.

The dispatcher's checklist

A trucker's delivery order is a work order as much as a permission slip. Before accepting the move, dispatch checks that the container details match the carrier's records and that the delivery site can receive the box. It does not prove the container is ready to leave: carrier and customs releases still have to clear, and many terminals also require a pickup appointment.

  • Container number, size and seal number
  • Pickup terminal or freight station and any pickup reference
  • Delivery address, receiving hours and contact
  • Empty return location and the party paying the dray

Lost pickup days and their causes

The costly mistakes are ordinary ones: a transposed container number, the wrong terminal after a vessel changes berth, a delivery order sent before release, or no instructions for returning the empty. Each one can stall a pickup while free time keeps running. Most are caught by comparing the order against the arrival notice and the carrier's records. Teams that set a last free day in CargoScope see the days left on the shipment, and the shared workspace marks it at risk if free time runs out before pickup.

Example

After filing the entry, a customs broker emails a delivery order to the trucking company listing OOLU3811040, the pickup terminal, the warehouse address and where to return the empty.

Questions

What does Delivery Order mean?

A delivery order (D/O) is the document that authorizes a trucker or warehouse to collect specific cargo or containers. Depending on the country, the carrier's agent issues it after release, or the importer's customs broker issues it to the trucking company.

Who issues a delivery order in the US?

Usually the customs broker or the importer, which sends it to the trucking company once release is arranged. The carrier's own release is a separate step.

Can a trucker pick up with a delivery order alone?

Not always. The container must also be released by the carrier and customs, and many terminals need an appointment and the trucker's details on file.
