Start and end events by facility
Dwell is measured between two milestones, and which two depends on where the box is. Use the carrier's timestamps for both, in the facility's local time, and decide up front whether to count calendar days or hours, since teams that mix the two end up comparing numbers that do not match. Rail ramps use the same idea with their own events.
- Import terminal: discharge to full gate-out or rail departure
- Export terminal: full gate-in to loaded on vessel
- Transshipment hub: discharge to load on the onward ship
- Empty depot: empty gate-in to the next gate-out
The price of a long stay
Time in a terminal is not free for long. Once free time runs out, demurrage or storage charges usually begin, and they can grow quickly. Long dwell also hurts the port: full yards slow every pickup, so one team's slow collection becomes everyone's problem. On exports, a box that dwells because it was rolled can face storage at origin. At a transshipment hub, long dwell usually signals a missed or late connection and a later arrival.
Reading published dwell averages
Some ports and industry groups publish average dwell times for imports, often split by truck and rail cargo. Treat them as a congestion gauge, not a forecast for one container. An average mixes boxes that leave the day they are discharged with boxes held for exams or unpaid charges, and your container's dwell depends mostly on its own releases and trucking.
Example
A container discharged at Savannah on Monday and gated out on Friday has a terminal dwell of four days.

Questions
What does Dwell Time mean?
Dwell time is how long a container stays at one facility, such as a terminal, rail ramp or depot, between arriving and leaving. For an import at a port it usually runs from discharge to gate-out, and ports track averages to gauge congestion.
What is a good dwell time for an import container?
There is no single target. The practical goal is to collect the box within the free time, which avoids storage charges and keeps space moving in the yard.
Is dwell time the same as demurrage?
No. Dwell time measures how long the box sat. Demurrage is a charge that may apply once that stay runs past the free time allowed at the terminal.
